Summer Electrical Tips: ACCL Electrical

Summer Electrical Tips

As the weather warms up, it’s important to remember that summer brings with it a number of electrical hazards that you might not be aware of. ACCL Electrical have put together a list of summer electrical safety guidelines that you and your family should be aware of.

Electrical Safety Tips for the Summer: Outdoor Hazards

Summer is a time when everyone wants to play outside, therefore it’s critical that everyone understands what electrical hazards to avoid when playing outside. Show your family where telephone poles and electricity lines are located by walking around the outside of your house and through your neighbourhood. Never play near a power line or contact it with any part of your body, a toy, a stick, or any other thing.

Assume that any electricity wires you encounter are active and dangerous at all times. If you spot a downed electrical line, keep a safe distance and contact your local utility provider right at once. For any reason, never approach an electrical substation (or downed power lines). There’s no way around it. If a friend, family member, or pet has wandered into this area, do not attempt to save them yourself—call 911 right at once. Never climb a utility pole or play near one.

In fact, never put up posters or brochures on utility poles, as this could endanger you and the utility personnel who have to work on them. This may sound redundant with the other outdoor summer electrical safety guidelines, but never throw shoes or articles of clothing up onto power wires, and never attempt to recover anything already dangling from a power line. There are more secure ways to enjoy summer than this.

To avoid getting kites, model aeroplanes, or other flying toys tangled on power lines, fly them in open areas such as parks or fields far away from power lines. Even if the tree isn’t touching a line, the extra weight from someone climbing the tree could cause a branch to touch the line, which would be harmful. In fact, if you believe any trees in your yard or area are dangerously close to power lines, contact your local utility to have them pruned or removed.

Keep a close watch on the weather forecast. Each year, almost 100 individuals are killed by lightning, and another 500 are severely injured. When a thunderstorm threatens, get inside and stay there until the threat has passed.

Electrical Safety Tips for the Summer: Around the House

One of the most crucial things to keep in mind is that water and electricity don’t mix well—in fact, they’re extremely dangerous when combined. These tips will aid in the removal of hazardous circumstances in the home if followed properly.

All electrical toys and appliances should be kept away from water. This includes pools, bathtubs, sprinkler systems, sinks, and other such items. If you are wet or standing in water, do not touch an electrical toy or appliance. Water conducts electricity very quickly, resulting in electrocution. Make sure your pool and hot tub electrical connections are completely grounded. If you have any doubts concerning appliance connections or their safety, our electricians can assist you.

Check that any large appliances (washers, dryers, refrigerators, air conditioners, and so on) are plugged into grounded outlets rather than extension cords. Now is also a good time to check to see if you have GFCI outlets installed in all of your home’s “wet” locations (bathrooms, kitchens, garages, basements, pool rooms, etc.)

Know where your circuit breakers are and how to properly switch them off in the event of an emergency. If you find that the cord is frayed or damaged in any way, don’t plug it in.
