Christmas Holiday Electrical Safety Tips

Holiday Electrical Safety Tips

With the changes in the weather patterns and temperatures it can only mean that the holiday season is here. Holidays can be an  exciting and fun time, but often with too much going on we tend to forget about home safety. The Christmas tree, gifts, decorations, and lights provide many elements that can affect electrical safety. At Accl Electrical we want you to stay safe and get the most out of your holiday electrical services. Below we have listed the top three holiday safety tips for this season.

Holiday Heating Safety:

As the weather gets colder heating your house becomes an essential. Since during the holidays people who are hosting dinner and or having a lot of guests over will want to maximize holiday safety on their heaters. Space heaters can be a great way to heat targeted areas of your home, but they need to be used with caution. By making sure your space heater is never left unattended, and pointed away from furniture, walls, and water can help prevent some serious electrical damages as well as fires.

Christmas Tree Safety:

If you have a fake tree you need to make sure that it is non-flammable. If you use a real tree you should make sure it stays watered, as a dry tree can be very flammable. No matter what kind of tree you have you should always keep it away from heaters, candles, and fireplaces.Tree lights can cause electrical fires, before you string lights on your tree you should check each strand for broken bulbs, plugs, and frayed cords. For optimum electrical safety you can keep a fire extinguisher close to your tree.

Outside Home Holiday Lighting Practices:

When deciding to put Christmas lights along your homes exterior there are a few safety practices that you should focus on when lighting up your home. Most outdoor lights require a ladder we recommended this to be a two-person job in order to avoid injury from falling.  One of the main safety practices is to insure the lights you have are rated for outdoor use (this will avoid the risk of water damage). Be sure to check each string of lights for broken bulbs, plugs, and frayed cords, as these can short out and cause electrical fires. DO NOT use nails or staples to hang lights; instead use plastic clips or hooks to avoid damaging wires. We recommend investing in LED holiday lights as they do not generate the same amount of heat. Again, insure when your lights are unsupervised that they are turned off.
