How to Prepare for Power Outages and Power Failures

Here in Ontario January and February tend to be the months that we get hit with large amounts of snow. Due to some of the extreme weather conditions in the winter it is important to know the proper power outage protocol and safety measures. Although most power outages only last a few hours, its always important to be prepared just in case they end up lasting longer. In this article the electricians at Accl Electrical wanted to share some helpful tips on how to prepare for power outages and failures.

Planning ahead:

Before a power failure or power outage occurs, it is important that everyone in your home is familiar with the plan. The plan that you make doesn’t have to be complicated, but it should address information such as the location of emergency kits and supplies like candles, flashlights, and food.

Purchase an emergency kit:

There are various different types of emergency kits on the market, having a emergency kit for power failures and outages can be critical. Many people choose to build their own kits which is great just as long as they include the essentials. Hydro One  recommends including some of the following items in an emergency safety kit:

  • Flashlight
  • Batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Water
  • A paper list of emergency contact phone numbers
  • Blankets
  • Non-perishable foods
  • Candles

Keep in mind that these items are only the basics. The amount of each item is dependent on how many people are living in the house.

Procedures:

When a power outage occurs in Ontario, the licensed electricians at ACCL Electrical recommend checking the Hydro One Canada website. Hydro One will be able to tell you how big the outage is in your area and what time it might be turned back on. If you notice your outage isn’t listed on their website you can notify hydro one by calling  1-800-434-1235.    once you have an understanding on how long your power might be out for it is easier to determine whether you need to use your emergency kit.
