Learn how to read an Electric Meter – 4 types

Once you learn how to read an electrical meter it could help alert discrepancies on your electric bill as well as help you keep track of your monthly energy usage. At ACCL Electrical we know there are 4 different types of electric meters which includes: Smart meters, Digital, electronic, and dial – In this article we will go over all 4 types and how to read them. See Below.

  1. Smart Electric Meters:

Smart electric meters can be one of the most confusing meters to read. On almost every model your meter will have a keypad, pressing the number 9 will bring up your readings. Along with the abbreviation “IMP KWH” followed by 8 numbers with “kWh” shown at the bottom of the screen. The numbers at the bottom of the screen are your reading. Some meters record night and day readings, to access this you’ll have to hold down the number 6 until you see “IMP RO1” followed by a series of eight number. – This is your night reading. If you press and hold down 6 again, you’ll see “IMP R02” followed by another 8 numbers – This is the day reading. If none of these steps work your smart meter usually has instructions on the meter or in the manual.

  1. Electronic Electric Meter

Electronic Meters can be pretty cut and dry. In order to read this type of meter you need to press the display button to see your reading. Unless the meter has an automatic scroll feature you can get the reading there. Ensuring you have a pen and paper handy, write down all the numbers you see from left to right. The only numbers you don’t need to write are any that are red or have a red background. Sometimes you may see two rows of numbers instead of one. Copy both rows down.

  1. Digital Electric Meter

Digital Meters are very similar to electronic meters. You will see a series of numbers and will need to copy them down, except for any numbers that are red or have a red background. Just like electronic meters you may have two rows of numbers instead of one. These two rows will indicate the day and night rate.

  1. Dial Electric Meter:

Just like smart electric meters dial meters can be tricky to read. Again you will need a pen a and paper write down the readings. Each dial on the meter turns the opposite direction of the one that comes before it and has numbers listed between 0 and 9.  Dial meters should be read from left to right, and if the arrow is between the 9 and 0, use the 9 and then subtract one from the previous dial.

How to estimate your electricity bill from the meter reading?

As soon as you have written down your electric meter reading in order to get an accurate estimate on what your electricity bill should be. You will need to find your electric bill from the previous month. Meters never set to zero so you will have to subtract last months total from your current reading. The result you get will be your total kWh usage for the current month. From here you will Multiply the kWh usage amount by the amount your electric company charges per kilowatt, hour, and any other fees. The result should be a close estimate to your current bill. If you notice a huge significant difference in the total of your bill double check your calculations, then call your electrical company
